Groqit Personal Inventory System

If you have a large collection of anything, you need a way to keep track of exactly what you have. For example, I have a huge cd/dvd collection. And sometimes, when I see a DVD or CD that I am interested in, I am not 100% sure whether I already own it or not. Here is a handy gadget that keeps track of your inventory in a portable way that you can take anywhere with you. The Groqit Personal Inventory System. You use your Groqit to read barcodes, store new items, and look up what you have. The only catch I see is that you have a membership to access the site that saves your database. By signing up for membership services, you can use this website to: create and organize lists on your Groqit to make it more useful. You can download translated data, so your lists are searchable by Title, Author, Composer or other category and avoid getting different versions of things you own, even if the barcodes don’t match.

    Nice writeup.

    About that “catch”:

Groqit’s free services include sharing lists with your friends. Not just Wishlists, but lists of stuff you have. This means you can get your friends something you know they want, even if they already have a whole collection of the same kind of thing. Say your nephew has 50 games. You know he likes games and wants more, but you can’t remember what he’s got. You get him to put his list on the Groqit site, and share it with you. (He doesn’t have to buy anything to do this.)

The Registry is private. The only way to see other people’s lists is by invitation. Each person has to confirm, via email, that the other one is a designated “Groqit Buddy” so there’s complete privacy protection.

The only way that works is for people to sign up, giving their email address. There is no other way to protect their privacy while offering the list-sharing functions.

Signup is free, list-making and -organizing web tools are free, Registry and Groqit Buddies services are free. No information revealed in the signup process is ever used for anything BUT privacy protection.
