There have been gadgets in the past that react to the energy of rain but Jean-Jacques Chaillout and colleagues at the Atomic Energy Commission in France are running experiments to allow droplets of water to power useful items. They have been using computer models to measure the energy that could be created by rainfall landing on different kinds of materials. They determined that between 1 nanojoule and 25 micro joules of energy could be generated per drop. I am not sure just how many devices that would power, but perhaps if billions or trillions of droplets could be contained in one area…well it might power your ipod! All of us need to be sure and move to an area that gets lots of rain!
