LG has announced the latest phone in their Black Lable Range. It’s called the LG Secret, and it has a couple of features that really stand out. It has carbon fiber and tempered glass to protect it from the elements, which also makes it difficult to scratch the screen. And it also has a built in motion detector, like the Apple iPhone so the screen automatically rotates depending on orientation. Check out the link for a review.

Most gadgets that you buy now days run on batteries. And they all have something in their documentation stating the life of those batteries. In other words, how long your device will hold a charge. Well, most of the time, those claims are wrong, and you need an emergency source of power. Two things that you take everywhere are your iPod, and your cell phone. Here is a Portable iPod battery that should be on your list of iPod accessories. The best way to save your battery life is to let your device die before you recharge it. That’s a well known fact. This gadget works with iPod Nanos and iPod video players. It will charge your portable gadgets without overcharging and causing damage to them by using two AA batteries.

Here is a cool idea. This Bluetooth Headset also displays Caller ID with its OLED display. And it also supports A2DP bluetooth so that you can listen to your music in stereo. “Right on the device there are Play, Pause, Stop, Prev, Next, Rewind/ Fast Forward, Volume Up/Down controls for controlling your music.” This would be great, I would think for the bulkier SmartPhones. Costs about $50.

This is a home fish tank with a difference. The Refrigerator Aquarium is designed to produce food that you can eat. At the bottom of the fish tank is another tank that contains freshwater fish, and at the top there are pods for growing vegetables. The plants filter the water for the fish, and the fish fertilize the water for the plants.

The Local River concept is based on the locavore philosophy, which advocates eating locally produced foods.

Quickies Notes

I would not have imagined that you could do anything else with a Post-It note, but some folks from the MIT Media Lab have invented a system called Quickies. What they do is take ordinary sticky notes, and make them digital and intelligent. These gadgets were developed by a grad student named Pranav Mistry. Quickies use an electronic pad and embedded RFID tags to figure out not only what is written on the note, but also where the not is stickied. “Quickies are just a functional demo right now, but it won’t be long until printing RFID tags on paper get cheap enough (and RFID readers get ubiquitous enough) that it’ll make sense to have Post-Its that are just a little bit more clever than your average piece of paper. “

Everyone with the latest generation of video game consoles knows that they go beyond being just gaming hardware. They can also play back videos, MP3’s, and even digital photos, without using a PC. Well, you need storage for that. The Media Xporter USB Hard Drive is suppose to be made for video consoles. But to me, it looks like just a 160 GB hard drive with a green paint job. Also included is the Prism Video Converter MX software, which converts to various formats for various consoles. Cost is about $100. But it doesn’t work on the Wii.

How would you like to carry your iPod around in a case that looks like it should be full of Altoids? Case Logic, the famous case maker of many different types, has came up with a tin metal case for the current generation iPod Nano and 80GB/160GB iPod Classic.

“The tins are custom fitted for either iPod, and are lined with a silicon insert to cushion the MP3 player while the metal case protects it from wear and tear. There are holes cut in the top and bottom giving you access to the iPod’s ports and controls, and the lid slides up and down so you can see the screen and access the scroll wheel. The cases run $30 each and are available in either black, pink, eggplant purple or silver depending on which version you buy.”

Time For A New Keyboard

Here is a keyboard from Apple that also works under XP. Whether you are an Apple person, or a Microsoft person, you have to admit that Apple has some well designed products. “Not surprisingly, the people at the Apple Store were as useless when it came to answering my questions as any other retail employee, but thankfully the keyboard works nearly flawlessly under XP. I’ll have to make a few registry changes to get my print screen button back, but other than that I’m really liking the new keyboard. It’s exactly like typing on a laptop, which I know some people don’t like, but I have no problem with it. The position of the CTRL and ALT keys are swapped compared to my old Logitech keyboard, but I’m sure the muscle memory in my hands will soon adjust. In fact the only real complaint I have was when I tried to plug my Wacom into one of the keyboard’s USB ports and found that it didn’t supply enough power for the tablet to work properly. Unfortunate, but far from a deal breaker.”

Homer Simpson Floating Radio

Well, Summer will be here before we know it, and everyone will get the old backyard pools filled up. Here is a Homer Simpson themed radio that floats. It is AM and FM (you mean they REALLY still have AM?) radio that you can enjoy right out there on your floatie. Homer floats on his back, with a can of Duff beer balanced on his stomach. Which by the way, tunes the radio, and adjusts the volume. A set of AAA batteries is required to fire Homer up. Waterproof, I hope. Cost is about $40.
