Update: Nope, seems like we were all wrong. He’s getting a normal Blackberry like every one else. How boring.

Being president of the United States is not the easiest thing to do. Especially if you are not allowed to carry your own selection of digital communication devices such as iPhones, Blackberrys or any other smartphone. But Barrack Obama was obviously not ready to abandon his phone – that’s why his is getting a “Barrackberry” now. Of course, this is just a nice nickname, the phone is actually called Sectera Edge.

Sectera-phones are produced by US-company General Dynamics and are said to be extremly secure and stable at the same time. This “rugged phone” could be thrown of the White House and it would still work. And the best part: It is probably one of the most secure phones on earth, given the fact that the NSA approved it in march 2008. And we don’t need to tell you any more about these guys, don’t we?

Keep on reading to catch some more interesting facts on the Selectra Edge.

Technically, the Edge is based on a Palm Treo 750. You can write emails, surf the web (by using HSDPA, UMTS, Edge and WLAN) and calling someone about three hours before the battery surrenders. According to US media, Obama will get a version with enhanced battery. Maybe he will have to pay even more than the 3350 USD the Selectra usually costs.
The Selectra Edge can easily switch bewteen encrypted and non-encrypted communication. Of course, nobody knows how good the encryption actually is, but it is supposed to adhere to NSAs highest certification class – which should be good enough to speak about classified and secret stuff.

Oh, and by the way: There is one thing that worries me. Guess what software the Selectar Edge is using? That’s right, it runs on Microsoft software. Doh. (via spiegel).
