WildCharger

The WildCharger is a flat pad that charges a device such as a cell phone just by placing it flat on the pad. No external charger is required, only the pad itself. And charging time is the same as if the device is plugged into the wall. But you can’t just put your cellphone or other device on this gadget. It must have a WildCharge adapter attached to it. According to the website: “Such simple enablement is part of our “no-screwdriver” philosophy – enabling a device must be simple and straightforward. In the future, we expect our technology to be integrated inside cell phones and other devices at the time of manufacture. At such time, users will not be required to make any adaptation to their electronic devices.”

I love those wind-up emergency flashlights and radios. And now, a company has introduced this technology to a different type of device. The Trevor Baylis Eco Media Player is a full function media player with 2GB of storage for music and video, plus an FM radio, in-line encoding from any media source, built-in LED torch light, and speaker. And guess what? It can charge your mobile phone, all from winding the crank.

The Eco player is about $254 from the Ethical Super Store.

keynetik proto

KEYnetik’s Motion Interface System is designed to be operated entirely with one hand. It uses multiple accelerometers to detect not only the direction of the movement, but also to tell where the force originates from. And it is immune to what is known as “motion interference” error. The system detects user gestures and translates them into on-screen interactions. This makes possible the operation of the device with one hand. And it’s totally ambidextrous. All you do is flip the device over.

In addition to the prototype device (above), KEYnetik has already completed a proof-of-concept implementation on the Nokia N95 called “RockNScroll”. N95 owners will be able to download RockNScroll for free by registering on the KEYnetik forums.

livescribepen2A company named Livescribe has just launched a product called the Pulse Smartpen. It looks like an ordinary writing device, but is actually a computer housed in a pen shaped case. The device is capable of digitally capturing handwriting in addition to recording audio simultaneously, synchronizing it to the writing. The only problem is that it isn’t compatable with any regular paper. It relies on a special Dot Paper. According to the website “Pulse is a new type of mobile computer that supports the four basic modes of human communication – reading, writing, speaking and listening. Using an embedded speaker and display for audio/visual input, and microphones and a pen for audio/visual output, Pulse advances the power and flexibility of mobile computing – it’s the missing link that now connects the paper and digital worlds.” It comes in two models, the 1GB and 2GB model. With the 1GB, the amount of storage capacity is enough for roughly 100 hours of recorded audio, and 16,000 pages of notes. The Pulse Smartpen casing is an anodized aluminum that doesn’t attract fingerprints, and weighs 1.3 ounces while measuring 6.1 inches long. The processor it uses is a Samsung ARM 9 and is powered by a rechargeable lithium battery.

iPod Translator Now Available for Civilians

vcommunicator

Remember the Universal Translator in Star TreK? It translated alien dialogs to the characters in Star Trek so that no alien was misunderstood. Well, in Iraq troops have been using iPods equipped with translators at various checkpoints to speak in Arabic to Iraqis while on mission. Because of the small size of the iPod, and its low cost, this has been very successful. It’s called communicator and it translates necessary English phrases, and also includes handy greetings and blessings, animations of hand gestures with audio, a map reader, and several other applications. And it can also connect to a loudspeaker through the line out if needed to speak to large groups. Perhaps announcing free donuts or a sale at Sears in the country’s native language. Now, the VCommunicator’s maker, Vcom3D, is planning to bring the application to the travel industry with a civilian version that will enable travelers to use similar technology to make their way around locations they are traveling in and blend deeper into the culture.

Here it is the Garmin Forerunner 405 Wireless GPS Enabled Watch. Whew that’s a mouthful, but there are a lot of features packed into this Sport Watch. If you are a serious marathon runner, or a serious gadgetaholic, then this might just be up your bicep. The features include GPS enabled, Training and Motivation Features such as Virtual Partner, Courses, Workouts, and Goals. It can be used for running and cycling outdoors, or indoors with an optional sensor. It weighs a mere 2.11 ounces, and not the 1 pound that I previously reported. Thanks Jake!
