Everyone with the latest generation of video game consoles knows that they go beyond being just gaming hardware. They can also play back videos, MP3’s, and even digital photos, without using a PC. Well, you need storage for that. The Media Xporter USB Hard Drive is suppose to be made for video consoles. But to me, it looks like just a 160 GB hard drive with a green paint job. Also included is the Prism Video Converter MX software, which converts to various formats for various consoles. Cost is about $100. But it doesn’t work on the Wii.

Here is a keyboard from Apple that also works under XP. Whether you are an Apple person, or a Microsoft person, you have to admit that Apple has some well designed products. “Not surprisingly, the people at the Apple Store were as useless when it came to answering my questions as any other retail employee, but thankfully the keyboard works nearly flawlessly under XP. I’ll have to make a few registry changes to get my print screen button back, but other than that I’m really liking the new keyboard. It’s exactly like typing on a laptop, which I know some people don’t like, but I have no problem with it. The position of the CTRL and ALT keys are swapped compared to my old Logitech keyboard, but I’m sure the muscle memory in my hands will soon adjust. In fact the only real complaint I have was when I tried to plug my Wacom into one of the keyboard’s USB ports and found that it didn’t supply enough power for the tablet to work properly. Unfortunate, but far from a deal breaker.”

The Mercury-On-The-Go from OWC is a somewhat tempting three-way connectible 500GB portable HDD. Component-wise there are no surprises, under the hood is a 2.5? 5400 RPM Hitachi Travelstar 5K500 with an 8MB cache. With Firewire 400/800 and USB 2.0 you get three-way connectivity and bus power.

I don’t think that there is quite enough cool looking circuitry in a portable HDD to warrant a clear case, but the design works. At 3.5? (W) x 5.5? (D) x 1? (H) and at 2.5 lbs it is as light as can be expected. The kicker for the Mercury is the price; it is $359.99, which means that you are going to want to go on the road with your equipment a lot in order to justify the expense. If you work from home a 3.5? will give you a lot more bang for your buck.

When you are doing a lot of computer work on the road, chances are you don’t carry around a printer with your laptop. What you have to do, if you are like me, is save the document on a thumb drive, and then transfer it to a desktop with an available printer. This portable printer from Canon makes it easy for you to carry the printer along with you.

Well, here is a gadget for the person that just wants to throw there money away. Hey, you can throw some this way! It’s called the Diamante Diamond Studded Mouse. It is a standard USB mouse that is studded with “dazzling white, fake diamonds”. Cost is about $60. Thanks but no thanks. It looks like it would be very uncomfortable to use, and I think I will just stick with my $15 mouse. If I want fake diamond studs, all I need is a trip to the crafts store, and my trusty glue gun.

Seagate has a new High-Speed Self Encrypting HDD (15K.6 FDE) that they called the Cheetah. I guess that it is a great solution if you are really paranoid that someone or something is going to steal your data. But seriously, I am sure it would be great for companies. Not sure about what encryption method it uses, or if there are choices.

Here is another keyboard, for your enjoyment. Most keyboards all look about the same, and do about the same thing, right? There are some, however that stand out, like the ones that are used for gaming, with the dedicated keys, and the glowing neon lights. Well, here is another choice from Kensington called the Ci70. This one doesn’t have built in USB ports, but it is a low profile keyboard with a USB cable attached to it. And just in case you aren’t using that cable with a USB device attached, it has a place to store it away. Cost is about $50.00

Kensington, the maker of many a computer related device, has created a thin keyboard that supports a great idea. Why not put some USB ports in the keyboard? I am sure that this has been done before, but perhaps not in as thin of a keyboard. It has two USB ports above the keys into the top, and uses a Macbook Air like button design. This makes the keyboard a lot smaller compared to others. But the keyboard itself has full size keys. Thats great, because I hate those small keypads!
